First aid

First aid is a set of activities at the scene of an accident related to ensuring the safety of injured people.

The purpose of first aid is to save human health and life (people injured in an accident or other event causing a sudden deterioration of their health) by taking specific actions by people who are the first on the scene.

These activities are usually conducted by bystanders and include simple, immediate procedures such as life support, mitigation of the effects of injury or sudden illness, securing a safe position and preparation for further medical treatment. These procedures are performed using primary medical products in generally available first aid kits.

First aid always begins with a safety assessment, recognition of the situation and the condition of the victim, and ends with assisting and, if necessary, calling the emergency medical team to the scene.

It is worth noting that providing first aid to the injured person is the responsibility of the person who witnessed the event and is legally sanctioned. It means that failure to act may result in criminal sanctions following Article 162 of the Penal Code:

"Whoever does not provide assistance to a  person in a position threatening the immediate danger of loss of life or serious damage to health, being able to provide it without exposing  themself or another person to the danger of loss of life or serious damage to health, shall be subject to the penalty of deprivation of liberty for up to 3 years."

Behaviour patterns in emergency situations:

  1. Evaluate security.

Ensure the safety of yourself and others - if necessary, warn people in the danger area.

  1. ALARM, CALL or ASK a specific person for help.

Persons who can assist are, in particular, porters and laboratory workers..

  1. If it is safe and they are injured, check their condition:

       1) assess CONSCIOUSNESS and BREATHING,

       2) call for medical help and/or provide first aid.

FIRST AID INSTRUCTIONS (in Polish)

  1. Secure the scene and/or inform the head of the organizational unit about the incident.

To prevent another accident, reduce material losses, and enable the investigation of the causes of the event, try in particular to:

  • separate the place of the incident by marking or a no-entry sign,,
  • immobilize machines,
  • do not move objects related to the accident - unless it is necessary to save people and property.
  1. Notify the Health and Safety Inspectorate about the incident.

A person who is an employee's supervisor or a student's guardian should immediately submit a Notification of an accident, near-misses or a call for medical assistance.

A preliminary report can also be made by a witness of the accident or the injured person himself and send via e-mail: inspektorat.bhp@uj.edu.pl.
