First aid is a set of activities at the scene of an accident related to ensuring the safety of injured people.
The purpose of first aid is to save human health and life (people injured in an accident or other event causing a sudden deterioration of their health) by taking specific actions by people who are the first on the scene.
These activities are usually conducted by bystanders and include simple, immediate procedures such as life support, mitigation of the effects of injury or sudden illness, securing a safe position and preparation for further medical treatment. These procedures are performed using primary medical products in generally available first aid kits.
First aid always begins with a safety assessment, recognition of the situation and the condition of the victim, and ends with assisting and, if necessary, calling the emergency medical team to the scene.
It is worth noting that providing first aid to the injured person is the responsibility of the person who witnessed the event and is legally sanctioned. It means that failure to act may result in criminal sanctions following Article 162 of the Penal Code:
"Whoever does not provide assistance to a person in a position threatening the immediate danger of loss of life or serious damage to health, being able to provide it without exposing themself or another person to the danger of loss of life or serious damage to health, shall be subject to the penalty of deprivation of liberty for up to 3 years."
